Iowa City Man Arrested, Claims He was 'Jumped' by 13 People

An Iowa City man claimed to have been assaulted by 13 people, but police and witnesses have a different version of what happened.

An Iowa City man and police had widely different versions of a dispute that happened this morning.

According to an Iowa City Police criminal complaint, Lonnie Demetrius Robertson, 49, of 2220 Taylor Drive called police to his home at 1:04 a.m. and claimed that he had been "jumped" by 13 people.

However, police stated in the complaint that Robertson had no visible injury and that he allegedly told them he did not know he was injured. He also appeared intoxicated according to the complaint.

After interviews with witnesses a different story emerged:

According to witnesses, Robertson had gotten into a dispute with an unnamed female. The woman and another witness told police that Robertson was going to bed and he wanted the woman, who he has been in an intimate relationship for 12 years, to come with him. The woman, however, did not want to come yet because she had coworkers over for drinks.

At this, Robertson allegedly became angry and pushed the woman, and witnesses said he placed his hands around the woman's neck choking her, according to the criminal complaint. Upon seeing this, people inside the house intervened in the dispute.

In the report, police seemed to dismiss Robertson's version of events. Robertson was charged with domestic abuse assault with intent or display of a weapon, an aggravated misdemeanor.
