Iowa City Police: Man Charged with Felony for June Stabbing that Punctured Man's Lung

The Iowa City police responded to find a man badly hurt with a knife wound.


A 31-year-old man with no listed address has been arrested and charged with two felonies after allegedly being .

Police say they have arrested Javoni M. Butler and charged him with willfully causing a serious injury, a Class C Felony, and going armed with intent, a Class D Felony, after allegedly stabbing a man following an argument on June 1.

According to police, on June 1 officers were originally called to the area of Burns Avenue at 9:40 p.m. for a report of a fight, when they received a second call from a man who said he had been stabbed. The man directed officers to where he was at , 1901 Broadway St. #3, and officers after a short search found a man who had been stabbed near this address.

The man was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for treatment of stab wound that punctured his lung through his left torso, according to a criminal complaint.

After interviewing the man, police determined that the original fight had been at 1219 Burns Ave., when he was involved in argument with a man he identified as Butler. The witness said during the course of the argument, Butler allegedly ran inside to grab a knife and the came back outside and stabbed him, according to the criminal complaint. After being stabbed, the man fled to a second address to safely call police.

The stabbing victim told police that he knew Javoni Butler and that was why he was able to identify him, according to the complaint.

Police said at the time that they believed Butler lived in Chicago perhaps fled there to avoid apprehension.

Butler is now being held in the Johnson County Jail on a $80,000 cash bond.
