Jones, 30, a Des Moines native, was a big star heading into the 2008 Olympics in China when one clipped hurdle prevented her from winning the gold. This year's Olympics in London was seen as her chance for redemeption.

As for Jones, she said before today's races that no matter the results of the race, she already feels like she has made up for her famous fall.

“I feel like I’ve already redeemed myself, you know?” she told TODAY’s Savannah Guthrie. “Stepping on that line for me, it will be about facing my fears.”

It will be interesting to see where Jones goes from here. Noted for her physical beauty, Jones has been able to parlay her Olympic success into several endorsement deals, and created more headlines with her revelation that she is a virgin.

A recent New York Times article has generated controversy for suggesting Jones did not deserve the attention she has received up to this point. An article that has received several rebukes of its own.
