OBITUARY: Edwin "Ed" Myron Blair

Edwin "Ed" Myron Blair, 88, of Iowa City, formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, May 16, 2014.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at the Storm Lake Municipal Cemetery in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Edwin was born August 14, 1925, in Ellsworth, Iowa, to Myron Edwin Blair and Laura Ahrens Blair. His life-long love of Allis Chalmers tractors came from growing up on the family farm outside Ellsworth. Ed enlisted in the U.S. Navy on November 28, 1944 and served until June 11, 1946. While in the service, he attended radioman’s school in Hawaii and was then stationed on an LCT on Guam. Upon discharge from the service, Ed earned his first class radioman’s license from a tech school in Kansas City. Ed next took a job in Storm Lake, Iowa, at local radio station KAYL. Later Ed was employed as a radio technician by Iowa Public Service, where he worked until his retirement.

In Storm Lake, Ed met Shirley Bryant, and they were married on April 1, 1950 at Shirley’s parents’ home in nearby Sulphur Springs. Ed and Shirley had four children. In recent years, Ed and Shirley lived in Iowa City.

Ed is survived by his wife Shirley of Iowa City and children Lynn (Charlie) of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Stephen (Marianne) of Redwood City, California, Ann (John) of Mahopac, New York and Julie of Iowa City. He is also survived by his sister Mary Lee Shortell of Shell Knob, Missouri; and five grandchildren: Carl, Eric, Sophia, Olivia and Aylie.

Ed's children remember him as an involved and caring father. He took them skating and sledding, and the family enjoyed picnics and walks in county parks around Storm Lake. The family fondly remembers summer vacations out west. There was not a toy, appliance, or household object that Ed could not fix. In Ed's retirement, he continued to enjoy trips to the county parks, working on his vehicles and visits with family.

Memorials will be given for tree plantings in F.W. Kent Park in Johnson County, Storm Lake city parks, and Martin Access in Cherokee County.
