OBITUARY: Jacob L. Horowitz

Friends and family frequently remarked on Jacob Horowitz’s unique perspective on the world around him. He was a funny guy with a charming wit who, even as a child, could embrace his destiny to be short in stature.

By age 26, Jacob’s sense of humor and deep sensitivity were evident in everything from his art to his relationships with loving family and friends.

Jacob always had a twinkle in his eye that matched his bright smile. He took pride in his long brown curly hair and impressive moustache, and would take great efforts to make both look perfect. He loved movies, so much so that he owned over 1,000 DVDs and majored in Cinema at the University of Iowa. Jacob’s knowledge of film knew no bounds, and he could debate with the best of film scholars. His favorite place on earth other than being at home watching films was Mondo Kim’s Video & Music in New York City, where they greeted the native Hawkeye as a familiar friend.

Jacob also loved music. He was pals with and a former member of the band Dead Larry, and kept in contact with the group members whenever they came to town. Jacob’s passion for art in all of its forms was evident in everything from the drawings he made, his beautiful singing voice, and the films he hoped he would one day make.

He is survived by his parents, Miriam Landsman and Steven Horowitz (Iowa City); his older sister Veronica (Minnesota); his younger brother Jordan (Iowa City); and many beloved uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents Estelle and Jerome Landsman (New York) and Veronica and Jacob Horowitz (New Jersey).

Jacob died peacefully on February 1, 2014.

Following a graveside ceremony Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at Agudas Achim Cemetery, the family will host a gathering at their home on 4320 Oakridge Trail NE, Iowa City. All are welcome to attend to share memories and to celebrate Jacob’s life.

In keeping with Jewish traditions, it is customary to not send flowers to the family. Kindly disregard the LINK to send flowers and if desired, a memorial donation may be directed to the Jacob Horowitz Memorial Fund.
