OBITUARY: Jay Stein

Jay Stein, age 67, died Wednesday, January 30, 2014.

A time of sharing will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service of Iowa City with a reception to follow.

Jay was born on August 13, 1946 in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Arthur and Helen Stein. He was a graduate of Lake Forest Academy in Lake Forest, Illinois and the University of Iowa where he earned a BA, MA, and a Juris Doctor. Jay was engaged in private practicein Iowa City for thirty-seven years and served as a magistrate judge for the sixth judicial district court from 2009-2014.

Jay was a man of elegance, charm, wit, and great compassion. All who knew Jay found a man who was a dapper dresser and had perhaps the greatest supply of suspenders in the state of Iowa. He was a collector of friends, an active member of the Iowa City theatre community, and a devoted husband and father. 

He is survived by his wife Mary; sons David Stein (Nicole Smith) of Iowa City and Araan Schmidt (Jamie Bardsley) of Grand Junction, Colorado; grandson Arlo Schmidt; and brother Arthur Stein (Wendy Danziger) of Bethesda, Maryland. 

He was preceded in death by his parents. 

The family extends their deep gratitude to Jay’s physicians, Dr. Tom Novak and Dr. Joe Truszkowski and to Iowa City Hospice for their most excellent care. 

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Iowa City Community Theatre or Iowa City Hospice.
