John S. Mummey, 65, of Iowa City, died unexpectedly Friday, February 28, 2014 at his home.
His family will greet friends March 5th at Lensing's Funeral Service in Iowa City from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. A memorial celebration will be held March 6th at 4:00 p.m. at Lensing's. Instead of flowers and plants, the family kindly requests that memorials be directed to Toys for Tots - a cause that John supported.
John was born April 29, 1948 in Iowa City, the son of Samuel and Georgiana (Hilliard) Mummey. He graduated from Iowa City City High School in 1966.
John attended and graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Education in 1971. John was a member of the National Letterman's Club for his accolades with University of Iowa Hawkeye swim team and he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.
John owned and operated Mumm's Saloon in Iowa City for 28 years, best known for the saying, "Ye who enters here is a stranger only once." He was a member of the Eagles. He was an avid supporter of the Iowa City Ducks Rugby Club. He also worked as an optical technician.
John is survived by his children, Kate (Jamake) Dudley, Ben (Clare) Mummey and their daughter Sloan, all of Iowa City, and Rachel Mummey of Jasper, Indiana; siblings Dr. Samuel Mummey of Montezuma and Jacqueline Fleck of St. Louis.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
