Ruth E. Tomas, 83, died peacefully Monday, May 26th surrounded by family.
Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 30th at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, with Father Gary Beckman officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Ruth Tomas Memorial Fund, Iowa City Hospice or the American Lung Association.
Ruth was born November 18, 1930 in Solon, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Elma Cambridge Slaymaker. She was a graduate of Solon High School where she played basketball. On November 3, 1949, Ruth married Charles “Chuck” Tomas in Iowa City.
Ruth was employed for many years as an account specialist in the University of Iowa general accounting office, retiring in 1990.
She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, VFW #3949 Ladies Auxiliary, Women of the Moose and the Herky City Sam’s Camp Club. Ruth loved the outdoors, especially camping, fishing and traveling with Charles -- they wintered in Texas. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed dancing.
Ruth is survived by her loving daughter, Linda Tomas McIntire and her grandson, Marc McIntire, both of Iowa City; her sister, Rita (Ted) Becker of Center Point; sisters-in-law, Earlene "Dutch" Slaymaker and Gladys Christensen, both of Iowa City; special niece, Marilyn Tomas of North Liberty; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her granddaughter Linell Lee McIntire and her brother, Robert Slaymaker.
