Phil Hemingway, Iowa City Community School District board director, is holding a listening post Saturday, January 7th, 2017, at the Iowa City Public Library, meeting room C, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. He will be talking about school issues and ICCSD Superintendent Steve Murley.

Did you know that the school handbook has a policy forbidding school district staff and board directors from criticizing the superintendent of schools? That's odd since the Tinker vs. Des Moines case clearly states that no one leaves their First Amendment rights at the school house gate, including students.

It's also odd since the school board has only one employee: the superintendent of schools. If the board is not allowed to criticize the superintendent, how can the board meaningfully evaluate the superintendent and decide whether to give him a new contract and a new raise, or not?
