Police: Iowa City Man Accused of Threatening to Kill Unborn Child, Mother

Officers were dispatched to a home on Sunday after a man, who had reportedly been up for two days and using drugs, threatened a woman and their unborn child.


An Iowa City man is facing a felony domestic abuse charge  after he allegedly trashed his home and threatened to kill a woman and their unborn baby.

According to an Iowa City Police criminal complaint, officers were called to a residence at the 2400 block of Highway 6E for the report of "a male acting crazy and tearing up the place." The caller told the police that the man, Ollie Mitchell Jr., 53, of Iowa City, had been up for two days smoking crack and drinking alcohol.

According to the complaint, the caller, who was the woman who lived with Mitchell Jr., told police Mitchell Jr. had become infuriated over money problems and had ripped the television off the wall. When the woman retreated to her bedroom and locked the door, Mitchell Jr. allegedly forced his way in and cornered her, saying he would kill her and kick their unborn baby out of her.

According to the criminal complaint, Mitchell Jr. is the father of the baby and he and the woman have lived together for several months.

When officers arrived they found Mitchell Jr. outside, and he reportedly had bloodshot and watery eyes, slurred speech, a strong odor of alcohol and exhibited impaired decision making.

Mitchell Jr. had three previous convictions for public intoxication violations and two previous convictions for domestic abuse assault. He was therefore charged with being a habitual alcohol offender, an aggravated misdmeanor, and was charged with domestic abuse assault third-or-subsequent offense, a class D felony.

Mitchell Jr. was still in the Johnson County Jail as of Tuesday afternoon on a $10,000 cash or surety bond for the two combined offenses.
