Police: Iowa City Teen Killed in Moped Crash

Iowa City Police say the Thursday night crash which killed 17-year-old Caroline Found was likely a single-vehicle accident.

An Iowa City teen was killed Thursday evening after she lost control of her moped on Mormon Trek Boulevard and crashed into a tree, police said.

According to police, emergency responders received a call about an single-vehicle accident at 9:43 p.m. on Thursday night on Mormon Trek Boulevard near Hawkeye Park Road. Witnesses told police that they saw Caroline Found, 17, of Iowa City, driving southbound on Mormon Trek in the east lane when she lost control of her moped and crashed into a tree in the median.

Found was set to be a senior at West High School.

Police say that Found was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, and that the collision killed her on impact. Police say they believe Found lost control after failing to negotiate a turn and hitting a curb, which sent her into the median.

Police say they are still investigating the accident.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen has an interview up with the principal of West High School.

West High Principal Jerry Arganbright called the death of Found, who was to have been a senior this year, a “tragic loss for our school and even more for her family.” 

Arganbright told the Press-Citizen that there will be grief counselors available at West High School.
