Police: Woman Set Own Bedroom Ablaze Following Argument with Husband

An Iowa City woman is accused of felony arson after setting a fire that required the response of the Iowa City Fire Department Sunday.


An Iowa City woman faces a serious felony charge after she allegedly set her bedroom on fire following an argument with her husband Sunday morning.

 caused roughly $5,000 in damage and required the response of the Iowa City Fire Department.

According to Iowa City police criminal complaint, Rebecca Shelley Rosenbaum, 61, of 1035 Howell St., Iowa City, had been in an argument with her husband throughout the morning on Sunday.

At approximately 10:00 a.m., Rosenbaum allegedly layed down on the bed and started four small fires around herself, which her husband then extinguished. Rosenbaum then allegedly started another fire, which spread to her clothes and a lampshade, forcing her to call the police when the fire began to burn out of control.

After the fire was extinguished and Rosenbaum was being treated for burn injuries, she allegedly told a paramedic that she had started the fire, and also told the police the same, according to the complaint.

Rosenbaum has been charged with first-degree arson for the incident, a Class B felony.
