Police: Man Cited for Littering with Fish, Resisting Arrest

Police were called to a home on Deforest Avenue Tuesday evening to find some unusual litter in the road.

An Iowa City man was charged with a few minor crimes Tuesday evening, after he allegedly threw fish into the street after his mother called officers to assist her with her son.

According to an Iowa City Police criminal complaint, police were called just before 10 p.m. to 1825 Deforest Ave. by the mother of Curtis Rarick, 52, of Iowa City. The mother informed police that Rarick had been drinking and was "starting to cause trouble."

The officer wrote in the complaint: "during the disharmony, Rarick threw about six fish (catfish, etc.) caught earlier in the day, out into the street in front of the residence."

Officers arrived to find the fish in the street and informed Rarick that he was being charged with littering, and was told to stand up and put his hands behind his back, according to the complaint. Rarick allegedly refused several times to comply although officers repeated the request, eventually having to be forced into handcuffs, jostling against the officers as they took him into the squad car.

Rarick was charged with violating the city's littering/dumping policy and with interference with official acts, a simple misdemeanor.
