Republicans Subjugate Elected Democratic AG to Republican Control

Republicans in the Iowa legislature are forcing theDemocratic AG to ask "Mother may I?" before he sues anyone out of state. Unique in U.S.

On Iowa Public Radio's "Iowa Press," guest Attorney General Tom Miller said he doesn't think he'll run for office again after 37 years as Iowa's Attorney General. Iowa's Republican majority in both houses of the legislature, apparently drunk with power, has passed a bill requiring the duly elected Democratic Attorney General for the State of Iowa to ask permission from the governor and the state legislature before joining a multi-state lawsuit with other state attorneys general on behalf of the citizens of Iowa.

No other state attorney general in the country is required to ask permission before conducting his lawful duties he was elected to do.

Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) has not signed the bill sent to her yet, but odds are in favor of her signing it unless AG Miller can talk her out of it.

I'd retire too if I were AG Tom Miller. Hamstringing a respected state attorney general who has had independence to do his job as he sees fit for 37 years is a poor way to thank him for his service.

Gov. Reynolds should think twice. If she signs this power grab, a Republican state attorney general would have to ask a Democratic governor and a Democratic majority in the state legislature, should that occur, for permission to pursue out-of-state lawsuits as well.
