The City of Iowa City Human Rights Commission will celebrate its 50th anniversary of establishment (1963) at its Annual Human Rights Awards Breakfast on Thursday, October 24 at 7:30 am in the Amos Dean Ballroom - Sheraton (Iowa City).
At the Awards Breakfast, the Human Rights Commission will recognize the human rights milestones and accomplishments of the Commission and community over the last 50 years and present community hopes for the next 50 years. Former Commissioners and local residents who have pictures or stories about the Iowa City Human Rights Commission and local human rights struggles are encouraged to email:humanrights@iowa-city.org or call 356-5022 no later than October 18.
The Iowa City Human Rights Commission is currently accepting nominations for individuals, organizations and businesses who have contributed to human rights either locally or abroad.
The six awards are the Isabel Turner, Rick Graf, Linda Severson-Individual in a Service Organization, Kenneth Cmiel, Bill Reagan Business/Community and International. Awards will be presented during the Human Rights Breakfast on October 24.
In August, the Iowa City Human Rights Commission unanimously agreed to rename the Business/Community Award the Bill Reagan Business/Community Award. Bill Reagan, former President & CEO of the Arc of Southeast Iowa is being acknowledged due to his dedication to community service and volunteerism as well as for his seven year tenure at The Arc of Southeast Iowa which under Bill's leadership expanded to a 13-county operation, moved into a new and larger facility, and quadrupled its client.
A ticket to the 30th Annual Human Rights Breakfast is $20. Tickets are available for purchase at the Cashier's Desk at City Hall (410 E. Washington Street).
Tickets must be purchased in advance of the event. A limited number of reduced price tickets are available please call 356-5022 for further information.
