My husband laughed when I got up early and started rushing around melting butter and chopping onions early Thanksgiving morning.
"Are you my little whirlwind?" he asked me.
I can't help myself. I remember my mother taking to her bed on Thanksgiving or just before. She feigned illness so as to get out of preparing a Thanksgiving meal.
So I, as the eldest, would make do with whatever we had. I'll never forget making pumpkin pie from actual pumpkins in the garden. I was determined we were going to have pumpkin pie if it killed me, and it just about did. I had to pick the pumpkins, bring them in the house, cut them apart, scoop out the innards, bake them, puree them, and make pumpkin pie from scratch: the crust, the filling, the whole she-bang.
Pumpkin pie from scratch isn't nearly as good as Libby's pumpkin recipe from the can and Hy-Vee's rolled-out refrigerated pie crust in tubes. This year everyone pronounced my pumpkin pie the best ever. I use New Pioneer Coop's spices, which I think are fresher. I whipped up heavy whipping cream and got enough sugar in it before it turned to butter. I might have forgotten to buy it except when I asked the dairy person at New Pioneer Coop if he had 2% organic milk in quarts, he mentioned heavy whipping cream, and I thanked him for the unintentional reminder and bought it.
My daughter was kind enough to post one of the orders I gave out as I was preparing our dinner minus the expletives on Facebook. She got a lot of likes on my quotation from her friends. I was embarrassed, but a general in her kitchen isn't always kind when there's a balky subordinate on hand. I won't say who. Suffice it to say, the subordinate quickly fell into line and complied with my "request."
If I had a scanner, I'd post a photo of myself when my hair was black like my daughter's in younger days. I look pretty, which is why I decided to leave it up, but particularly psychotic. I'm absolutely certain that the day in question is Thanksgiving, and unsurprisingly, I'm still in my nightgown. I'm gradually winding down, but it might take a while.
