University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics sources who undoubtedly wish to remain anonymous told me today that UIHC is changing its parking ramp rates as of Monday, 1/13/14. Parking ramp rates will be no more than $10 a day. For three days, parking ramp rates will be $27 or $9 a day. For a week, the rate will be $58. Long-term parking in the Hawk lot, where Cambuses are available to carry patients and their relatives/caregivers back and forth to the hospital, will be free week nights after 5:00 p.m. and before 7:00 a.m. and weekends except when Hawkeye games are played at home.
I asked if there will be or has been a press release announcing this, but my sources said no. Perhaps hospital officials don't wish to appear that they bowed to media pressure, most of which was exerted by Facebook pages like GrampsvsRamps, which was publicized by investigative reporter Lee Rood of the Des Moines Register. Rood has taken on the costs of parking for the parents and grandparents of seriously ill children treated at the UIHC, costs that are prohibitive in many cases, as a cause celebre.
