What's Open and What's Closed for the Fourth of July in Iowa City

July 4th is on a Wednesday this year, see how city services will be affected.


It's our nation's birthday this coming Wednesday, and that means some city employees will be getting the day off to celebrate. The city has released its July 4th schedule for city services and they are as follows:

The July 4th celebration will result in some street closures. Here is the schedule for the closures according to the release:

Noon: A one-block section of Iowa Avenue, between Clinton and Dubuque Streets, will close at noon to prepare for the evening's events. It will not reopen until Thursday.

5 p.m.: A two-block section of Clinton Street, between Jefferson and Washington Streets, will close at 5 p.m. but will reopen after the fireworks have concluded.

9 p.m.: Streets in the area of Hubbard Park, including Market Street (between Clinton and Madison Streets), Madison Street (between Market and Washington Streets), and Iowa Avenue (between Madison Street and Riverside Drive), will be closed at 9 p.m. for the fireworks. They will reopen approximately 30 minutes after the show is over.

In addition to holiday activities, the City of Iowa City has announced its July 4th office schedule. The following offices will be closed according to the city release: City Hall, the Animal Care and Adoption Center, Landfill, Library, and Senior Center. City buses will not operate on the holiday.

Additional closings according to the release:


AIRPORT: Administrative offices will be closed, but Jet Air will be open.

PARKS AND RECREATION: The Robert A. Lee Recreation Center and Mercer / Scanlon Gym will close at 5 p.m. Indoor pools at the recreation centers will close at 4 pm., and City Park Pool will close at 8 p.m.

POLICE: Offices for administration and records will be closed, but Patrol will operate on its normal schedule.

SENIOR CENTER: Senior meals will not be served or delivered on July 4th.

SOLID WASTE: Crews will not pick up garbage, recycling, or yard waste on Wednesday. Residents whose normal garbage pick-up day is Wednesday should place their materials at the curb by 7 a.m. the following day, on Thursday, July 5, although the City cannot determine exactly when items will be collected. Residents whose normal pick-up days are Thursday and Friday should follow their normal schedule and have materials at the curb by 7 a.m.

WATER: If a water emergency occurs, call the city's 24-hour emergency line at 319.356.5166.
