One of the more memorable summer traditions for many Des Moines area youngsters is Day Camp at The Salvation Army. Hundreds of the metro's kids have enjoyed the experience over the years.
Pre-registration for Summer Day Camp 2012 will be held on Saturday, May 12, at The Salvation Army's Citadel Corps Worship and Community Center at 1216 E. 25th Court. The pre-registration session, which offers a discount on the first week's fee, takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Summer Day Camp 2012 will be held Monday through Friday from June 11 through August 10 with the exception of July 4.
This year's day camp experience will include a literacy program designed to improve reading skills over the summer. An accredited instructor will facilitate the program which is being underwritten by a grant from the Anderson Company Foundation on behalf of EMCO Enterprises, an Anderson Company located in Des Moines.
Summer Day Camp also includes indoor and outdoor recreation, swimming, field trips, crafts, music, movies and a variety of other activities.
