Recycling Your Old Roof for Future Roads

Recycling doesn’t end at the curb. It can even start with your roof. Homeowners who plan to replace their roof can recycle the old asphalt shingles through Metro Waste Authority. This doesn’t mean you can throw them in your Curb It! cart, but you can hire a roofing company committed to recycling shingles or do-it-yourself with these easy recycling guidelines.

Landfills are Home to Recycling Locations
We manage two landfills, Metro Park East  and Metro Park West in Mitchellville and Perry, and both offer discounted pricing for recycling versus landfilling shingles. The shingles are ground up and incorporated into hot mix asphalt to make new roadways, helping to reduce petroleum imports.

Recycling Guidelines
Residents and roofing companies must follow guidelines to qualify for the recycling discount. Asphalt shingles need to be sorted from the wood, metal and plastic debris that come along with reroofing a home. However, nails and felt paper are allowed. Magnets pull out all the nails in the grinding process.

Technology & Demand = Viable Recycling
Technology and demand for the material make recycling shingles viable. Henningsen Construction recently won the bid to purchase our ground shingles for the upcoming year, and when they pave a new road, it may contain your old roof.
