Discussion on Stormwater Utility at Johnston Council Work Session

The Johnston City Council meets at 6 p.m. for a work session and 7 p.m. for a regular meeting.

Discussion of Johnston's project takes center stage at the city council's work session tonight.

The utility, which took effect July 1, created a fee to pay for stormwater upgrades and construction in the city. Residents recieved their first official bill with the utility in August.

At the council's Aug. 6 work session, the council heard the first details of a storm water utility grant program that would reward residents for implementing stormwater best management practices such as rain barrels and rain gardens.

The program mirrors those in Ankeny, Ames, Iowa City and North Liberty and provides funding assistance for stormwater improvement work.

Initially, the program would have $6,000 to dole out to residents.
