Dragons in State Baseball Tournament, Stand for the Silent, Cheerleading Clinic Set This Week

Batter Up: The Dragons play Linn-Mar of Marion at noon Wednesday in the 4-A state quarterfinal Wednesday at Principal Park in Des Moines. Seventh-ranked Johnston (26-12) takes on unranked Linn-Mar (27-15). Ankeny and Des Moines East are the top-ranked teams in the tourney.

I Am Somebody: Stand for the Silent’s Kirk Smalley will share his moving presentation on Saturday, Aug. 3, at Des Moines Area Community College. The anti-bullying program begins at 1 p.m. in the auditorium at DMACC's Ankeny Campus Building 6. Free Cheerleading Clinic: Polish your tumbling, cheers, stunts and more at a cheer clinic offered by Apex Athletics. The clinic starts at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, at the gym, 5750 N.W. Beaver Drive. Ages 3 and older can attend, it is open to all skill levels. Sign up visit on the Apex website at www.apexathletics.net.

Johnston Farmers Market: From organic food to one-of-a-kind clothing to specialty foods, an array of offerings are for sale every Tuesday at the market. The vendors are open for business from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the City Hall parking lot on Merle Hay Road. Did we mention the food? From barbecue to nuts to kettle corn, plus fabulous baked goods like cakes, cinnamon rolls, pies and cookies – Yum.
