How Do You Beat the Heat Johnston?

While most of us are lucky enough to work inside with air conditioning, some Johnston residents are outside braving the heat.

Even under an , Don and Shirley DesPlanques were working at their fruit and vegetable stand in the parking lot of Grinnell State Bank.

The couple had been at their spot since about 9 a.m. selling corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, melons and much more.

"We try to stay in the shade and drink lots of ice water," Shirley said. "It's been hot this week, but we've taken a light load."

The couple generally stays until they've sold out or it's 6 p.m., Don said.

"Whichever comes first."
