UPDATE: Jake Highfill Edges Incumbent Erik Helland to Win House District 39 Primary

After a slow day of voting, residents of had their say in the Republican Primary.
Unofficial results show Highfill garnered 622 votes, or 51.79 percent of the vote, to incumbent Erik Helland's 572 votes, or 47.63 percent of the vote.
Highfill, 22, is a recent graduate of the University of Iowa, while Helland, 32, has been the Iowa House Representative for District 69 since 2008.

Highfill thanked his supporters for his victory Tuesday night.
"I'm happy, we won," he said. "It's awesome. I appreciate all the support people gave me."

His next order of business is catching up on some much needed sleep.
"I'm going to sleep for three days, then back to the campaign trail," he said.
Helland commended Highfill on a great night.
"He worked really hard," Helland said. "I look forward to serving my constituents for the next six months."
The district was redrawn this year in accoradance with changes from the 2010 census.
The new district includes Johnston, Grimes and a portion of rural Polk County west of Saylorville Lake.
