Johnston and Other Metro Residents Can Escape the Heat at Salvation Army Cooling Centers
The record-setting heat continued Monday and will likely remain the rest of the week.
Residents of Johnsotn and surrounding metro cities looking to escape the brutal heat can head to one of
Persons needing relief from the heat can spend the day in air conditioned rooms at the Salvation Army's two worship and community centers in Des Moines at 1216 East 25th Court and at Sixth and Forest north of downtown Des Moines.
The east side Citadel Corps is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The near north side Temple Corps is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The two sites are open for heat relief any weekday the outdoor temperature or heat index is 100 degrees or warmer.
The Salvation Army is also assisting at Polk County's overnight cooling center at 1548 Hull Avenue by providing food for dinner and breakfast each day.
