Johnston Boys' Head to State Soccer Championship Tonight

The Johnston Dragons defeated Valley 1-0 Friday night.

A loss to Valley High School earlier this season didn't deter the  boys' soccer team Friday night.

The Dragons defeated Valley 1-0 to move on to the Class 3A State Soccer Tournament Championship Saturday for the first time in school history.

According to The Des Moines Register, the game came down to a final play by Johnston's goalie Andy Smith.

Smith stopped two shots on goal to hold of Valley.

Johnston coach Heath Weeks told The Register Smith's ability is more than luck.

"Sometimes that looks like luck, but a lot of the time it’s his positioning,” Weeks said. “I couldn’t think of a better person to have back there to keep the ball out."

Johnston  3-0 on Thursday in the State Tournament quarterfinals.

The Dragons take on Iowa City West at 5 p.m. tonight at Crownie Soccer Park in Des Moines.
