Johnston City Hall Hosts Combat Hunger Drop-Off Location

The city will collect needed items for the Iowa Food Bank until Nov. 14.

One in eight Iowans are food insecure, according to Hunger in Iowa statistics.

The City of Johnston is helping to bring food to area families this year by participating in the Iowa Food Bank's Combat Hunger Drive.

The city serves as a drop off location at City Hall through Nov. 14.

  • High protein items – canned meats (tuna and chicken) and peanut butter
  • Canned soup
  • Instant oatmeal
  • Boxed meal kits
  • 100% fruit juice
  • Paper and personal products – toilet paper, paper towels bar soap, diapers, toothpaste

In fiscal year ending June 30, 2011, the Food Bank of Iowa channeled 8,731,975 pounds of donated grocery products and USDA commodities to needy families and individuals through a network of 425 agencies in 55 Iowa counties.

Hunger & Food Insecurity
Hunger is defined as the uneasy or painful sensation caused by a recurrent or involuntary lack of food and is a potential, although not necessary consequence of food insecurity. Over time, hunger may result in malnutrition.
Food insecurity occurs whenever the availability of nutritionally adequate and safe food, or the ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways, is limited or uncertain.
