Johnston Dragons Dig Pink/Spike Blue to Raise Awareness for Breast, Colon Cancer

Tonight's event kicks off at 6 p.m. with the junior varsity match against Dowling Catholic.

The Dragon volleyball team will once again be digging pink and spiking blue tonight against Dowling Catholic. 

The fifth annual event continues to raise money for the Side-Out Foundation and American Cancer Society to help in the fight against breast and colon cancer.

This is the second year the team has added the spiking blue element to help raise awareness for colon cancer - something that touched each team member when assistant coach Lacey Fulton battled the disease.

Last year, the event raised more than $6,500 for Side-Out and American Cancer Society.

The evening includes door prizes, a bake sale, a raffle with grand prizes such as an iPhone, iPad and iPod. Novelty merchandise will also be for sale in order to raise funds for the cause.

Raffle tickets are one for $5 or three for $10.

The team also sold T-shirts for $15, to be worn at the event, with a choice of light blue or light pink.

Donations can be made on the Dig Pink/Spike Blue website.

To date, the website lists $430 being raised. The goal, according to the website is $4,000.

Tonight's event is set for 6 p.m. with the junior varsity match, followed by the varsity match at 7 p.m.
