Johnston News You Need: College Recruiting Seminar, Scholarships

It's been a busy week in Johnston with mock trial honor announced and a college athletes recruiting seminar set to help parents work through the process. Check out roundup of honors and upcoming events.

College Recruiting Simplified
Johnston High School will host a seminar aimed to help parents better understand the college athletics recruiting process.

"College Recruiting Simplified," presented by recruiting expert Dave Carl, is open to both students and parents.

The seminar takes place at 7 p.m. Feb. 2 at the Johnston High School auditorium.

Scholarships
The Johnston Community School Foundation will award up to two $10,000 Raymond Marie Schlenker scholarships to graduating seniors.

Visit the JCE website for application requirements and an application. The deadline is Feb. 15.

State Mock Trial
Three Johnston students were recently awarded medals for their outstanding performance in the state Mock Trial competition.

Johnston Middle School students Michelle Kumar and Kathryn Paszkiewicz were recognized for outstanding witness and attorney, respectively.

Summit Middle School student Jillian Gabby was awarded an outstanding witness medal.

Only about 20 students received the awards at the state level. More than 300 students competed at the state competition at the Polk County Convention Center.

Dean's Honor Roll
Several Johnston residents were named to the fall dean's list at Creighton University in Nebraska.

Scott Laurenzo is a sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Matthew McDermott is a freshman in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Matthew Roth is a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Christian Schoper is a senior in the College of Business.

Full-time students with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher are eligible for the dean's honor roll.
