"We understand that everyone is busy and schedules are often hectic, but we also need to be cognizant that Summit is located next to an elementary school and in amongst large residential neighborhoods which enable many of the surrounding children to walk or ride their bikes to school," the release said.

The layout of the pick-up and drop-off areas of Summit are not ideal, but the department said it has worked with the school district to help address and improve conditions.

However, police remind residents they need to drive appropriately and follow traffic laws.

  • Stop for pedestrians at crosswalks. Crosswalks exist at all intersections – even if they are not marked. Pedestrians have the right of way at all crosswalks and motorists must yield to them.
  • Drivers must watch the roadway at all times. Drivers need to remember the unpredictability of children and drive defensively.
  • Always follow the speed limit, which is often lowered in designated school zones.
  • Refrain from using cell phones or engaging in any other distractions while driving.
  • Make sure you and your passengers are buckled up properly.
