Johnston Police Department Joins Iowa Tobacco Pledge

The Iowa Pledge aims to keep tobacco out of the hands of minors across the state.

The Johnston Police Department recently took a step to ensure that tobacco stays out of the hands of Johnston youths.

The department joined an initiative called Iowa Pledge, a partnership with the Iowa Alcoholic Beverage Division to educate local retailers and enforce Iowa's tobacco laws.

Since the pledge began in 2000, tobacco compliance statewide has increased to 92.7 percent, according to a department news release.

"The Iowa Pledge retailer certification classes are a great way for employees to prepare themselves to refuse illegal tobacco sales," Johnston Chief Bill Vaughn said in the release. "The classes will help retailers maintain a compliant and responsible establishment."

As part of the initiative, officers will conduct compliance checks on local establishments. Underage customers, under the supervision of officers, will attempt to purchase tobacco products.

Employees who make an illegal sale will be issued a citation on the spot.

Criminal penalties for selling tobacco to minors include a $100 fine for first offense, $250 for a second offense and a $500 fine for third or subsequent offenses.
