Johnston Police Detectives to Be Disciplined for Burglary Suspect's Escape

Two detectives on duty when a burglary suspect escaped will face discipline and additional training, the Johnston police chief says.

The Johnston Police Department will discipline two detectives after a burglary suspect escaped custody on Nov. 11, the Des Moines Register reported today.

According to the Register story, detectives Tyler Tompkins and Travis Hamilton will receive additional training, but the nature of their discipline was not disclosed by Police Chief Bill Vaughn. 

“This is something that is intolerable and inexcusable and it will be dealt with appropriately,” Vaughn told the Register. “There is an expensive price to be paid when you let your guard down. It’s regrettable, and I apologize for the embarrassment this has caused.”

Last week, that Conor Jack Forest, 19, escaped police custody on Nov. 11 after he was left un-handcuffed in an interview room.

Forest was being questioned by Johnston Police detectives and an investigator from the Dallas County Sheriff's Office.

On Saturday evening Nov. 12, officers tracked Forest to a residence in Illinois. He was awaiting extradition to Polk County.

At the time Lt. Lynn Aswegan said the incident was under investigation, but placed a portion of the blame on the .

"It was a combination of the building and our officers letting their guard down," he said. "The building is nothing new. We can't blame it all on the building."
