Johnston Looks Toward Ankeny After Good Fight Against State Champs Dowling Catholic

The Dragons hoped to continue their win streak Friday, but were overpowered by Dowling Catholic. Last year's Class 4A state champs, the Maroons, won the matchup 27-14. This week, Johnston takes on Ankeny.

The Johnston Dragons have been exciting to watch this season, which has seen its ups and downs. Last Friday was a down. This Friday, the team hopes for another up.

The Dragons fought hard Friday but came up short against defending Class 4A state champions Dowling Catholic.

The Maroons won 27-14 in a game played at Drake Stadium. Senior Connor Yocum and junior Cullen Maahs each scored a touchdown, while senior Eric Bass scored both extra points after the touchdowns.

After a 2-0 start, which included wins against Ottumwa and Council Bluffs Lincoln, the Dragons evened up their record at 2-2 with back-to-back losses to Marshalltown and neighboring .

A much-needed win on homecoming against Indianola evened up Johnston's conference record at 1-1. And after a 49-7 thrashing of Sioux City West on Sept. 30, the Dragons found themselves at 4-2 going into the Dowling Catholic matchup.

The Dragons' final two foes are two top-10 teams in  and Southeast Polk.
