Johnston Residents Recognized for Volunteering in Schools
Dan and Gretta Wilkinson received a Johnston school district R.O.S.E. Award for the time they spend volunteering at Lawson Elementary.

Dan and Gretta Wilkinson love children.
Each week the Wilkinsons spend nearly four hours at working with first- and second-grade students.
"Our kids went to Lawson when it was the only elementary school in Johnston," Gretta said. "We just love kids. They say the cutest things."

Gretta, a former school board member, first volunteered in her daughters' classes. Since their children and grandchildren live in Cedar Rapids and San Diego, the Wilkinsons decided the time was right to be a volunteer.
Four years later, the Wilkinsons were recognized with the district's R.O.S.E. award.

Lawson Principal Trisha Lenarz-Garmoe nominated the couple for the Recognizing Outstanding Support of Education award.
"It's a nice way to recognize folks that do special things for the district," said Lenarz-Garmoe. "Dan and Gretta are just very devoted, faithful volunteers at Lawson."
The Wilkinsons spend most of their time working with first-graders on math or reading.
"It's important for kids to get a good foundation," Dan said. "Sometimes we help with reading, others with math."
Last year, Dan noticed a first-grade boy who always walked with his head down.
"I call it a hangdown look," he said. "I asked the teacher if I could work with him one on one."
This year, Dan asked Lenarz-Garmoe for permission to continue mentoring the now second-grader.
"They had a good bond," Lenarz-Garmoe said. "That's special for that little boy and bless Dan's heart for wanting to continue that relationship."
In the four years the Wilkinsons have been volunteers at Lawson, they've made quite an impact.
"It's nice to have some fourth-graders see you in the hall and say hi," Dan said. "One third-grade girl always gives me a hug when she sees us."
Last spring, the Wilkinsons went to Lawson's student concert.
"I couldn't figure out how they knew we were there," Gretta said. "There were so many people there. They were just so cute."
Of their recent R.O.S.E. Award recognition, the Wilkinsons were humble.
"We're very honored," Gretta said. "We appreciate being nominated and getting the award for something we enjoy doing."
Lenarz-Garmoe said volunteers like the Wilkinsons are something special.
"When a teacher can count on regular volunteers, it's a great help in education," she said. "We love when people feel a part of our district. It's wonderful when people take that kind of ownership and want to make a difference."
The Wilkinsons suggest volunteering as an easy way to be involved in the community.
"I think a lot of people will find it rewarding if they just take the time," Dan said.
