Johnston's Scanlon Brothers Still in State Tournament

Joe Scanlon continues to roll toward the championship bracket, while Jake lost his first match today.

Two Johnston wrestlers easily slid into the quarterfinals at the Iowa High School State Wrestling meet yesterday.

Today, the road got a bit tougher for one of the Scanlon brothers.

Jake Scanlon, a sophomore in the 285-pound 3A bracket, lost his match against Bettendorf's Nate Shaw in a 4-2 decision.

Scanlon then entered the consolation bracket and won his first match against Dakota Elledge of by pin in 3:18.

Earlier in the morning, Joe Scanlon, a senior in the 220-pound 3A bracket, beat Fort Dodge's Ben Schnurr in a 1-0 decision.

Both Scanlon brothers topped pre-season picks by the Parliment.

Last year, Joe Scanlon ended the year with a record of 38-6 and placing fifth at the state tournament in the 215-pound bracket.

Jake Scanlon finished with a record of 35-10, placing seventh at the state tournament in the 285-pound bracket.
