Johnston School Voters OK 10-Year Extension of Tax Levy

Johnston school district voters approved the continuation of the PPEL tax levy with 81 percent of the vote on Tuesday.

Johnston residents approved the continuation of a tax levy to finance school repairs, building, technology upgrades and more.

Residents approved the physical plant and equipment levy with 81 percent of the vote. In all, there were 739 votes cast in favor of continuing the levy, and 167 votes in opposition.

The levy was approved at the same rate of $1.34 per $1,000 of assessed valuation for the fiscal years 2014-2023.

"We're very pleased with the results," Superintendent Clay Guthmiller said Tuesday night. "We're very appreciative of the support that the district receives from our parents, our business comment and our patrons. I think it shows the appreciative of the value they place on quality schools."

The district is currently receives about $2.5 million from the levy to use for the purchase of property, buses and technology equipment, building repairs, heating and cooling replacement and more.

In the past, PPEL money has been used to finance a joint project with the City of Johnston for fiber optics throughout the district, purchase of buses, flooring, roofing, sidewalks and parking lot additions, and the purchase of land for . In addition, $6.5 million PPEL proceeds helped to build .
