Johnston Takes a Swing at State Softball Championship, Substate Baseball, Ice Cream Social and More This Week

State Softball Title Quest: The Johnston Dragons are looking to play spoiler at this week’s Iowa state softball tournament. First up, Johnston faces West Des Moines Valley at 7 p.m. Tuesday night, July 23, at the Harlan Rogers Sports Complex in Fort Dodge. Also in  the tourney are Dowling Catholic and defending champion Ankeny. Go Dragons! 

Substate Baseball Action: Also in the title hunt this week is the Johnston High School baseball team, which plays at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 24, at home against the winner of the 2nd round substate game (the winner of Southeast Polk vs Indianola vs winner of Dowling Catholic vs Newton.) Wow, OK, show up at the field to see who the Dragons take on.

Johnston Farmers Market: From organic food to one-of-a-kind clothing to specialty foods, an array of offerings are for sale every Tuesday at the market. The vendors are open for business from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the City Hall parking lot on Merle Hay Road. Did we mention the food? From barbecue to nuts to kettle corn, plus fabulous baked goods like cakes, cinnamon rolls, pies and cookies – Yum. 

Homemade Ice Cream: Who can resist homemade ice cream? Or a free bounce house? St. Paul Presbyterian Church, 6426 Merle Hay Road, is hosting an ice cream social at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 28, with treats and a free bounce house. The event is open to everyone.

Mingle with the Johnston Chamber: The Johnston Chamber of Commerce gathers for a lunch July 25 and the topic is social media and marketing, presented by Trilix. The cost is $20. RSVP by Tuesday, July 23, to the Chamber office at 276-9064 or email heather@johnstonchamber.com.

Get Moving: There is no loafing at the Johnston Senior Center, 6300 Pioneer Parkway. This week’s programs include: tennis at 9 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; Mah Jong at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday; pickleball at 9 a.m. Thursday; and guest speakers. The visiting nurse will be at the center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, and an Iowa State University nutritionist will speak after lunch Friday.
