Johnston Urbandale Soccer Club Shows Power at Iowa State Cup

The club boasted four champions in the contest.

The Euro Cup may be on most soccer lovers' radar lately, but earlier this month there was a local cup up for grabs.

The select teams for the excelled at the Iowa State Cup during the last week of May and first weeks of June.

JUSC managed to advance all five teams to the semifinals, more than any other club in the state. Four teams advanced to the finals.

The U13 girls overcame West Des Moines Soccer Club 2-0 in their final, while the U14 girls triumphed over Iowa City Alliance.

The U19 JUSC/WDMSC college sophomore girls found themselves trailing Iowa City Rush 1-0 with 15 minutes remaining. They used experience and determination to score two goals as time ran out, winning 2-1.

The U13 boys had a tremendous weekend, but came up short in their final against WDMSC.

Over the entire State Cup year, JUSC finished with five state champions, five runners-up and two losing semifinalists out of 13 cups contested.

"We are extremely proud of all the teams and excited that we have five teams that will have kids from the Johnston and Urbandale communities that will be representing them and the entire state of Iowa, when they travel to play in the Region 2 Championships in Saginaw, Michigan, over the weekend of June 22-24," said John Sheridan, JUSC executive director.

Results from the Region 2 Championships were not yet available.
