Now Playing: Johnston High School Presents 'Thoroughly Modern Millie'

The students of Johnston High School music program will be brushing up on their tap dancing skills as they present their third musical production in as many years on April 19 -21.

Following on the heels of sold-out performances of The Music Man and The Wizard of Oz the past two years, this year’s show is Thoroughly Modern Millie, a roaring twenties tale of a small-town girl, Millie Dillmount, who comes to New York City to marry for money instead of love.

In the musical, Millie soon becomes infatuated with the flapper lifestyle, but problems arise when she checks into a hotel owned by a shady character involved in the disappearance of several of the female residents. The Broadway production won six Tony Awards in 2002, including Best Musical. The musical has since become a popular choice for high school productions.

Johnston’s production involves a variety of middle and high school students who take on all aspects of putting on the show, ranging from singing, acting, and dancing to stage hands, lighting & sound technicians and set-building to hair and make-up artists. It really is a student-driven show – led by JHS vocal music director, Eric Shepard.

The curtain will rise for Thoroughly Modern Millie on Friday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m., with two shows on Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and the final performance on Sunday, April 21 at 2 p.m. All performances are at the Johnston High School auditorium.

Tickets are now on sale; all seats are assigned and tickets cost $10. Tickets may be purchased at the accounting office at the high school Monday through Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. Tickets may also be purchased at the door prior to the performances as available.
