Pathway Church's 5K Fun Run Raises Money for Children's Programs

This year's event includes a toddler trot and diaper derby for younger kids.

In the mood to watch a diaper derby and toddler trot this weekend?

Those are just two of the new events during 's second annual Shawn Engeldinger 5K Fun Run and Walk.

The fun run, which takes place on the High Trestle Trail, was dedicated to the memory of the Johnston church's associate pastor, who passed away a few years ago, said Teri Vavricek, run organizer.

"The main purpose is to raise funds for our church's children's program," she said. "He (Shawn Engeldinger) was passionate about children and the programs, so we can do two things at once, raise money and remember him."

Last year, the fun run drew nearly 60 participants, with more expected Saturday.

The race is open to everyone with a $15 registration fee that can be paid the day of the event. Children 10 years and under can participate for free with family members. Strollers are welcome.

T-shirts are also available for $10.

This year participants were asked to find sponsors in family and friends to raise money, Vavricek said.

"It's just a fun community type thing," Vavricek said. "Last year, it was simple and light. It's a fun run for sure."

The event was such a success last year the church has added activities including the diaper derby and toddler trot.

The toddler trot is a 100-yard dash for chidden five and under, while the diaper derby is for crawlers only. Both events are free and require no registration.

"This year, we've had more buzz about it, especially at the church," Vavricek said. "I've had several emails that people are excited that we're doing this again.

Local businesses have also donated items including hot dogs, corn dogs and snow cones to be given for free after the run.

The First Church of Christ is even allowing Pathway to use its property since it backs up to the trail.

"We'll go north 1.55 miles then turn around and go back," Vavricek said. "It's a nice little stretch, easy to walk and run."

Day-of registration and shirt pickup starts at 8 a.m. at 310 N.W. Ash Drive.

The 5K begins at 9 a.m. with awards after the last finisher. The toddler trot is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. and the Diaper Derby at 11 a.m.
