PHOTOS: A Little Irish at Johnston Early Childhood Summer Camp

The Little Leprechauns class included jigs, music and lots of shamrocks.

There's a bit of Irish in a few wee ones around Johnston this week.

There were tin whistles, bells, shamrocks, leprechauns, and a few jigs inside a West classroom asΒ Johnston and Urbandale children took part in the Little Leprechauns .

Kelly Schulte, an Irish dance instructor with the Foy School of Irish Dance, led the 4- and 5-year old students in everything Irish this week.

"I liked playing the tin whistle," said Jonah Dell, 5, of Johnston. "I liked playing with that, it was my favorite."

Jonah enjoyed the class so much he asked if they could have one next year for 6-year-olds.

Molly Virnig, 5, of Johnston enjoyed the Irish dancing the best.

Schulte said she was approached about teaching the four-day class after coming to the preschool on St. Patrick's Day.

"Quinnlyn (Schulte's 3-year-old daughter) goes to preschool year and they asked if I'd teach the 4-year-olds to dance and then they asked to host the summer class," she said. "I think they had a lot of fun."

While Schulte teaches dance in rented space at Grace Ballet, she said it was important to teach the children about more than just dance.

"Monday we had Everything Irish Day, then Shamrock Day, Leprechaun Day and Music Day," she said. "We had storytime and games for them to play."
