PHOTOS: Legos Come Alive at Robotics Summer Camp

Several soon-to-be sixth- and seventh-grade students enjoyed the Lego Robotics 2 summer camp at Summit Middle School.

Legos aren't boring.

That's the message one Johnston sixth-grader wants other students to hear.

Leah Fitch was just one of several students to take part in the Lego Robotics 2 summer camp at this week.

The camp, for soon-to-be sixth- and seventh-grade students, is part of the sponsored by Johnston Community Education.

"People think Legos are boring and you just put them together," Leah said. "But these aren't regular, there are motors and stuff, it's a lot more than that."

Grace Saliers, a sixth-grader, agreed.

"Some kids might not think it's very fun, but actually it is," she said. "I chose this camp because it sounded really interesting and I love Legos and science."

On Thursday, the two girls were programming their robot to sense when it ran into an object.

"You know the eyes in Wall-E?" Leah asked. "It's like the eyes in Wall-E, they are ultrasonic sensors in the front and a touch sensor in the back. If it gets pushed it goes in the other direction."

Earlier in the week the girls had programmed the robot to play golf.

On Friday, all of the students will give a presentation on what their robot can do and how they got it to do the task.

Across the room, Tanner Bowman, seventh-grader, and his teammates were programing a dump truck.

"We made it as a forklift but then it turned into a dump truck," he said.

Partner, Josh Dastal, seventh-grader, said his favorite part of the camp was putting the Legos together and testing.

"I"m really enjoying it," he said.
