Recycling Cooking & Motor Oil

Your Used Oil is Someone Else's Energy

Whether you plan to fry your turkey dinner or change your motor oil this month, Metro Hazardous Waste Drop-Offwants your leftovers. Both types of oil are reused for energy.

Vegetable Oil Recycling: Two Benefits
By recycling used vegetable oil, you’re not only supporting the biodiesel industry, you’re also not pouring it down the drain, where it can build up over time, plug your sink and damage the city sewer system. One gallon of used vegetable oil equals one gallon of fuel. Only used vegetable, canola, corn or peanut oil are accepted; no grease, please. Residents can bring unlimited quantities. If you are business, contact Mid-Iowa Renewables.

Motor Oil: Heats the Drop-Off
Used motor oil is reused at the Metro Hazardous Waste Drop-Off to heat the facility during the colder months, which sadly have arrived. We even take the empty motor oil containers and recycle them. (In case you didn't know, plastics that held hazardous waste, such as motor oil, shouldn't go in your Curb It! recycling cart.) Residents can bring up to 75 lbs. for free, while businesses must qualify. Learn  more.
