Saturday at Johnston Green Days: Firefighters Breakfast, Police Spaghetti Feed, Parade and More
The Saturday lineup includes the parade, Bill Riley Talent Search, firefighters pancake breakfast, plus food booths and a carnival.
Pancakes, a parade, the Bill Riley Talent Search -- that's just some of the fun set for today at Johnston Green Days, the city's annual summer festival.
Events are free and staged at the Johnston Commons area next to the Johnston Public Library.
Here's a rundown of events set for Saturday, June 15, via the Green Days website:
Live Evening Entertainment
5 p.m. - 8 p.m., DJ- Danzing the Night Away
6-10 p.m., Barn Bands at the Barn (Youth Bands)
6 pm- Lynndoom
7 pm- Grant Ganzer
8 pm- Origami Animals

Pancake Breakfast, Food Booths
The Johnston Firefighter's Association will hold a pancake breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m. at the Johnston Fire Station. The breakfast is sponsored by Community State Bank and Walmart. There will be all-you-can-eat pancakes and sausage.
Station tours and apparatus viewing will be offered before the Green Days parade. Free will donations are accepted.

Food booths are open on the grounds from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday. A variety of foods will be offered from pizza, tacos, BBQ, ice cream and European style food!

The beverage tent will be open at 11 a.m. on Saturday night and close at 11:30 p.m. A variety of Budweiser products will be available for purchase.
Parade
Hundreds of Johnston families will line Pioneer Parkway for the 10 a.m. kickoff of the Green Days parade. The parade route is about 1.2 miles long and begins at the intersection of South Drive and Pioneer Parkway. The parade goes south along Pioneer Parkway and north on Greendale Road before ending behind the Hy-Vee and Village Square Mall.
Bill Riley Talent Search
The Bill Riley Talent Search runs from 1:15 to 4:30 p.m. in the state tent in the west parking lot of the library. There is no cost to attend.
A winner from the Sprout and Senior divisions will advance to the 56th Iowa State Fair Bill Riley Talent Search Competition in August from which a senior grand champion wins a scholarship. Second through 5th place winners will win cash prizes.
Performance categories include:
- Vocalists: classical, country or contemporary;
- Dancers: tap, jazz, ballet, pointe, acrobatic or baton;
- Instrumentalists: classical or contemporary
The Johnston Police Department will be serving up a Spaghetti Feed at the Police Station, 6221 Merle Hay Road, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Donations will be accepted with proceeds benefitting Youth Homes of Mid-America.
Over the lunch hour the department will also hold a public safety expo and offer tours of the station. The police department will offer the Kid Pix ID Program with an identification card and DNA kit, car seat inspections and installations, bicycle registration and collect unwanted ammunition.
Fun for the Kids!
Kids crafts and a balloon artist will set up shop from noon to 5 pm. Saturday in the Johnston Library Meeting Room. There is no charge to participate.
The Green Days Carnival opens at 11 a.m. on the east lawn of the library. The cost is $20 for a wristband for unlimited rides.
