From the Johnston Public Library:
Last year, Mark Gee was named a Hoover Uncommon Student and was the recipient of the Mariah Becker Award.
The award recognizes a student project that embodies or promotes the spirit of volunteerism and leadership. While many projects have a defined beginning and end, some projects lend themselves to continuation after students graduate from high school. Those continuing projects are eligible for the Mariah Becker Award. The award carries with it a $250 stipend to be given directly to the organization carrying on the project.
Mark’s project last summer was a series of classes at the Johnston Public Library called “Dream Big with Plants.” To continue to support this interest, Mark named the Johnson Public Library as the recipient of the Becker stipend.
Funds will be used to purchase plant science titles for the youth book collection.
Representatives from the Hoover Association in West Branch came to Johnston on June 4 to present the award to library staff.
