Summit Middle School Students' Work Tops Competitions

Three students were honored this week for their work in local and state competitions.

It was a big week for students.

Three students were honored for their hard work in the Polk County Bar Association 2012 Law Day Competition and State National History Day.

Polk County Bark Association 2012 Law Day Competition
Seventh-grader Shivani Kumaresan was recognized at an award luncheon on Tuesday after winning first place in the Polk County Bar Association 2012 Law Day Competition.

Shivani won in the poetry division with her poem "The Courtrooms of America."

The poem speaks to the necessity of a strong court system and the obstacles the judicial branch faces today.

This year's theme was No Courts, No Justice, No Freedom.

State National History Day Competition
Seventh-grade students Afshan Chandani and Luke Safris were named National Finalists for Exhibits at the State National History Day Competition in Des Moines.

Their exhibit "The Challenger Tragedy: A Nation Reacts, NASA Reforms" was selected to move onto the Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest June 10-14 at the University of Maryland, College Park.
