Superman Safety Fair Comes to Metropolis - Er, Johnston

The Wynnsong 16 movie theaters in Johnston will host a free Superman Safety Fair for Kids from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 15.

The event is pegged to the release of "Man Of Steel," said Joanna Scott with Carmike Cinemas. The safety fair will include Lifeserve Blood Center, the U.S. Marine Corps, Urbandale Fire Department and other agencies, all with the goal of teaching kids "that not only do we have local superheroes, but that they can be one themselves," Scott told Patch.

There will be drawings for free prizes, coloring books, and more. 

Also through the end of the weekend the theater is hosting a food drive for the Food Bank Of Iowa.

Scott answered a few questions on the event for Johnston Patch:

What items does the Food Bank need most?

The Food Bank Of Iowa needs any non-perishable food item (canned goods, cereal, etc.). They recently sent what they could to Oklahoma City to help the tornado effort and need to stock our pantries back up.

What message do you want kids to take away?

The main message we want kids to walk away with is that superheroes are not just the guys in costumes we see on TV.  After all of the devastating events over the last year, we want to show them a variety of local groups who are superheroes in their own way. Finally, we want kids to take away the ideas that by helping in their communities, working to stop bullying, and many other paths will let them become a superhero, too!

When will the drawings be done and how will winners be notified? What are some of the prizes? 

Drawings will be done by kids willing out a sheet to visit each booth, when their sheet is full of fun stickers, they get to fill out a form and enter for a family pack of passes (4) to the movies!

Each vendor will also be handing out their own supply of items, kids will recieve safety coloring books, and Warner Brothers is sending a super amount of “Man of Steel” prizes to be distributed throughout the day.
