Veterans Day Events in Johnston and Des Moines Metro

While we should honor our veterans every day, Monday we celebrate Veterans Day.

To observe the holiday several groups and businesses will honor veterans.

• A breakfast buffet will be offered for free on Monday in all Hy-Vee stores with in-store dining. The buffet is complimentary for veterans, and open to others at a small cost. Stop by the Johnston Hy-Vee.

• The Iowa Gold Star Military Museum at Camp Dodge in Johnston hosts the Notable Iowa Veterans Exhibit. Forty Notable Iowan Veterans are profiled in this new exhibit. The exhibit will be open in honor of Veterans Day from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday.

• Veterans Mermorial Dedication in Urbandale. The Urbandale Community Action Network, along with Friends of the Parks, hosts a dedication ceremony for the new Urbandale Veterans Memorial at 8 a.m. Monday at the Charles Gabus Memorial Tree Park and Gardens, 3600 86th St.

• "Salute To Veterans - Women in the Military Celebration" is presented by American Legion Post 663. The event includes a chili feed with refreshments and a recognition of E1 through O7 honoring "Women in the Military" from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at American Legion Post 663, 6805 Douglas Ave.

• Veterans Day Program at Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center, Veterans Memorial Auditorium includes representatives from all Veteran Services Organizations at 11 a.m. Sunday.

• Veterans Day Observance with the VFW Post 9662, 1309 N.E. 66th Ave. in Des Moines includes observance and a light lunch starting at 11 a.m. Sunday.

• John Feller of VFW Post 9127 will recite the Gettysburg Address in Full Lincoln Regalia to honor Veterans at 9:45 a.m. Monday at the Hy-Vee at 4605 Fleur Drive in Des Moines.
