Ask anyone who knew Coaldrake and they would tell you she was a dedicated mother and in turn, soccer fan.

"She loved to be able to go out and watch her kids play soccer," Peter Coaldrake said of watching sons Justin and Tristan. "She realized that there were a number of families, a number of kids, that weren't able to afford the opportunity, especially to play select soccer. She started to push the soccer club for the need of some financial assistance fund. So that got set up and when everything happened and she passed away it was renamed."

"She was just a passionate person, she loved sports, she loved education," said Jeff Smaha, president of JUSC and family friend. "She loved everything there was to make a person well rounded. And she believed that every child deserved to play."

Since Coaldrake's sudden death in 2008, the Karen Coaldrake Financial Assistance Fund has come a long way, said Ozzie White, JUSC operations manager.

"We give the opportunity to all kids who would like to play soccer regardless of finances," he said.

The fund receives tremendous support from the community, White said.

In fact there are a number of fundraisers that contribute to the fund, including the held during Johnston Green Days in June.

The JUSC website features a scholarship page, in which families can confidentially apply for assistance for the club.
