Central Iowa Remains Under Severe Thunderstorm Watch Wednesday (Updated)
After torrential rain and 70 mph winds tore through our area this afternoon, central Iowa could still see more storms.
Updated, 4 p.m. Don't put those umbrellas away quite yet. After our area was pummeled by heavy rains and fierce winds Wednesday afternoon, the National Weather Service has kept us under a severe thunderstorm watch until 10 p.m. tonight. Areas affected include Dallas and Polk County. Our earlier coverage The National Weather Service in Des Moines has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Des Moines and several other central Iowa communities. The warning was issued at 2:26 p.m. The outdoor warning sirens sounded in West Des Moines at 2:40 p.m. as the National Weather Service warned that winds could reach 70 miles per hour. Here's a glance at the path and the areas expected to be impacted by the storm: AT 224 PM CDT...A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WAS LOCATED NEAR WAUKEE...AND MOVING NORTHEAST AT 35 MPH. HAZARD...QUARTER SIZE HAIL AND 60 MPH WIND GUSTS. SOURCE...RADAR INDICATED. IMPACT...HAIL DAMAGE TO VEHICLES AND CROPS IS EXPECTED. EXPECT WIND DAMAGE TO ROOFS...SIDING AND TREES. * LOCATIONS IMPACTED INCLUDE... CLIVE...GRIMES...WINDSOR HEIGHTS...URBANDALE...JOHNSTON...POLK CITY...ANKENY...GRANGER...SAYLORVILLE LAKE...SAYLORVILLE...ANKENY AIRPORT AND ALLEMAN. The warning is set to expire at 3 p.m.
